Disclaimer: These preliminary ‘Self Tests’ may help you understand that though pain can be a significant indicator, it is not the only signal for TMJ dysfunction. A final diagnosis will be required by a professional like Dr. Eddie Siman. If you feel severe pain or you know you cannot do some of these exercises please do not attempt them.
How does an unbalanced bite affect your strength and flexibility?
Try this simple experiment:
- Bend over and touch your toes.
- Put a pen between your teeth and try to touch your toes again.
You should be able to touch your toes more easily with the pen between your teeth than without it.
With an unbalanced bite, so many of your muscles are straining and working to compensate for it. When you jaw is aligned, as it is when you bite on the pen, your muscles are freed up to focus on what you ask them to do They no longer have to multi-task.
This demonstrates that a clenched bite requires use of not only the jaw muscles but the muscles of the head, neck and back to bring the teeth together.
Simply put, what we are saying is “Yes, something is wrong or not ideal. Let’s find out what it is.”
